Senior Chemistry Lab.
(probably all Sixth Form Science students)
2nd from left The late Norman Jones, the long serving, very able and well
liked Senior Chemistry Master with a dry North Country (I believe) wit.
Norman taught me Chemistry through most of the School from 1950 until the
arrival of 5th from right, Dennis Grimsley, an Old Boy, (aka Chief, or
Teach) in 1955 who smoothed down the edges for the last couple of years.
Jack Richards is in the foreground, 5th from left and Derek Davenport
(apologies for having named him Dudley in previous photos) is 2nd from
right. I think it could be I. Gilchrist far right.

LHS Joe Crowther ; (Can't see Percy anywhere though!) 8th from left ; Willy
Wain and just in front of him, hidden but for the left shoulder, clad in
khaki and sporting a lanyard, is I think CSM Bob Fletcher, as his brother
Dennis, also in CCF uniform (as they both were on the Physics Lab photo) is
2nd from right. Pete Jennings is far right. (Les

Senior Physics Lab
I left BGS in the July of the year that the move to Mill Hill Lane was
completed in September, so the Physics lab environment is not familiar to
me, but some of the faces are. It appears to be members of the UVISc
demonstrating some physical experiments and being watched or assisted by
boys of lower forms. It may have been a School Open Day, as this was taken
in 1958, or the Hobbies Exhibition when scientific experiments were
demonstrated in the Chemistry and Physics labs, or it could have been a
dummy run before the big day, judging by the time shown on the clock. I was
in LVISc with 6 of the budding scientists and spent 4 years in the same form
as another. From the left those I recognise are :- Chris(?) Hall, Pete
Jennings, Willie Wain, ? , ? , David Bonzo Burns, Ezra, - Neville, Dennis
Fletcher, Bob Fletcher, ? , ? , ? , and Roland Ibbett.
I
was good friends with Bob Fletcher (right foreground in CCF uniform) through
most of the school, and lost touch through my leaving Burton and his going
to University. If anyone is in touch with Bob and he is on the Net, I would
like to hear from him. From Les Simpson |
